KATIE
As we are connecting this project with our Introductory Practice we're going to discuss each of our projects and how it relates to our theme Freedom, Energy and Life.

My Project is based on my trip to Arizona, Phoenix. While I was out there I learnt a lot about the Native American's and the sad story of Chief Joseph and his famous surrender speech. I wanted to show how hard he fought for freedom and peace, and the hard times the Native Americans went through.

"Tell General Howard I know his heart. What he told me before, I have it in my heart. I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed; Looking Glass is dead, Too-hul-hul-sote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led on the young men is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets; the little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are—perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever."
- Chief Joseph, Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt

This is a piece I painted. I'm used to painting very neat and realistic but I wanted to try out something new. I didn't plan out the face with pencil and didn't have a clear idea about what to do until I started painting. I really enjoying painting this piece and would like to add it into our Project.
I'm also making dream catchers and looking into my photos I took when I went to the Native American cave's in Sedona to see the art work and hand prints on the wall.

We had a meeting with Nico last Monday. We're going through our work as we may do some changes to the Installation. When we meet up as a group again we'll will go through and discuss these changes and will post new designs and ideas. We also have to post our research and description of what our individual projects are about and how they all connect with our theme (Freedom, Energy and Life).

Slowing down

“The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it.”
Jim Goodwin

“For fast-acting relief, try slowing down.”
Lily Tomlin

“Slow down and enjoy life. It’s not only the scenery you miss by going to fast – you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.”
Eddie Cantor

The world is moving at breakneck speed. Information is overflowing 24 hours a day. At work or in school we are busy, busy, busy. Lunch is wolfed down. When we get home there is still so much to do, so much we want before finally falling into the bed.
Sometimes this works fine. Sometimes this can cause problem, feelings like it’s all just too much and like you are not in control.

  • Eat before you get ridiculously hungry. If you’re really hungry it will be hard to eat slowly. The best way to avoid this is to not wait for too long but to eat when you feel just a little hungry. Or to have your meals at specified times during the day that you know from experience will be appropriate to avoid getting too hungry.
  • Put down your fork between the bites. The classic advice is to put down your fork and then chew. Then to pick up your fork again after you’ve swallowed, take another bite and repeat the process. I like this tip because it forces you to slow down. Instead of taking that stressed energy from your day and just letting it power through the meal too as you quickly wolf down everything on your plate.
  • Focus on the food and yourself. Not on what other people are doing. It’s easy to get drawn into someone else’s pace while eating (just like when driving or running). Be conscious of keeping your own pace instead of just unconsciously eating as fast as everyone around the table might do.

You can lower your stress levels.

When you feel like life is going to fast then you feel like you are losing control over it or barely hanging on. This, as you also probably have noticed, can cause a lot of unnecessary stress.

Simply do the things you are doing slower. If you are moving quickly then just take a deep breath and slow down your movement and your pace when walking. Drive your car and ride your bike a little slower. As mentioned above, eat slower. Take in life around you a bit instead of focusing on setting a new speed record.

Take a breath, slow down and reconnect with what is most important a calm and focused energy and effectiveness replaces the frantic and stressed energy of a mind that is going too fast for its own good. Then you can take action and start doing the most important things one at a time.

A part of our freedom as individuals comes from our relationship and interaction with the natural world. Without it we would not be able to survive, let alone live and express freedom. If we are constantly surrounded by man-made construction we lose the ability to engage and interact with arguably the liberty found in nature.

Nature as freedom, energy and life...
  • It is alive, growing and changing the world around us.
  • Its is free, finding or breaking a way out of its constraints.
  • Natural energy source; light, heat, earth, water.
  • It is free to grow wherever it wants, intertwining and changeable.

"So free in its nature that it cannot be constrained"

Freedom for people around the world has different meaning.
For middle eastern people freedom is almost every thing, freedom is more important than every thing.
To think,talk,or even breath freely.

This diagram was the first idea I thought off.
I would make from wood a display unit in which we would house our
group project.their are 5 areas in which to hang or display our projects
on exhibition day.
Once the team as an idea of space in which to work in you can then plan better. In other words you know the length, width and height to work within. And so you can build you models or paintings to a particular size because you know how much space you have to work in.

I designed this second display unit so that the work of the person who exhibits their work on the top of the display unit would be seen more clearly.

This is the final design.I designed this pentagon shape allowing everyone to have an equal space in which to exhibit their individual projects.
I will build the frame work with 75mmx50mm prepared soft timber.
We all agreed at our last meeting that this was the most appropiate idea in which to
exhibit our future works.

Designs Drawings for Installation

DESIGNS
Here are same of the first designs for our Installation piece. I have done a copy of this for all members and copied the notes Paris wrote down for us when we were in a meeting with Nico. We had done three different designs and decided to use the last idea (3) as we believe it worked best for us in the group.

(1) Our first idea was a 4 sided model with a 3D piece on the top.

(2) But our second idea developed into this piece. So we still had 4 sides but the top bit was on a slope, making a smaller side to work on.

(3) We then decided this idea would work best as all sides are showing equally so all out different projects are connected.
This will also work well if we added a rotating disc at the bottom of the piece or placing mirrors round the sides.
